EFFY BETH: AC/DC
In 2013, in preparation for her genital reassignment surgery, trans artist Effy Beth made an open call to be photographed before and after the intervention. She selected several photographers to work with her documenting the process with the idea of producing a book in the future. Some time after the surgery, during the post-op process, she took her own life, but before doing so she left a file.
On her computer, we found the selection of photos and the intimate diary she wanted to include in the AC / DC book. Effy decided that AC / DC should be published with the money she won from suing her health provider OSDE for failing to cover the medical procedure (something guaranteed by Argentine law). This was her last wish, which after years of collective work we published in 2018 through EDULP.
The project continues to shift and move, developing a life of its own. The book travels to publishing fairs and schools, the photography exhibition goes to cultural centers and community spaces. In this way, the project revitalizes and puts into circulation Effy's artistic and political work occupying spaces and raising conversations about identity, gender, discrimination, care and affection.
